Noir - Is Three Times a Charm?
The first time we visited Noir in Pasadena we only had time for a glass of wine and Nachos a la "Francaise," toasted baguette, melted emmetal cheese (a fine swiss cheese), sauteed white mushrooms & roasted garlic oil. Known for their small plates, the dish was tasty and satisfying.
We returned the second time for dinner. Good thing we had a lot of time, because our meal took way too long to finally arrive. The waitress and manager, Mike, were extremely apologetic and in the end took care of our entire bill. It seems the chef wasn't communicating with others in the kitchen??
When our food arrived, the Farwell Burger was one of the best hamburgers we have ever tasted. The beef was cooked with tarragon, caramelized onions, remoulade sauce and melted manchego (a very tasty goats milk cheese). My Halibut a la Veracruzana arrived with olives, capers, onions and a tomato ragout. The Crab Fritters served with a black pepper aioli (olive oil and garlic) and mustard sauce, were delicious.
Noir is big on wines and their wine flight menu has an interesting selection. One can try the Cabernet Flight with a taste from California, France and Chile, or the Tempranillo with wines from three different regions in Spain.
The third time we visited Noir, Mike, the manager, was not as friendly and the food didn't seem as thrilling. With so many new Small bites restaurants opening in Old Town Pasadena, Noir better shape up their service or they may find themselves stuck with the check once again.
